Atoms are the smallest and simplest parts of any matter that can exist on their own and still have the characteristics of the element from which they originated. Even though atoms are super small, guess what? They have smaller structures. Take a look at the image of a zoomed-up atom to see the parts. We are certainly not able to see atoms with our naked eyes but we know that thousands upon thousands of these make up different substances. The periodic table has 118 elements and all of these elements have their own unique atomic structures. Even though these are unique, the basic structures are the same. All atoms have a nucleus that contains positively charged protons & neutrally (0) charged neutrons. All atoms also have shells or orbitals which hold negatively charged electrons.
